2000 pt. Mixed List: Gabriel Seth + Astorath the Grim

Just ran across this photo and thought why not design a 2k list around Seth and Astorath:

HQ:
Astorath the Grim
Chapter Master Gabriel Seth

Troops:
Assault Squad - 2 Melta-guns, Powerfist
Assault Squad - 2 Melta-guns, Powersword, Land Raider Redeemer
Tactical Squad - Flamer, Missle Launcher, Powerfist, Rhino
Death Company - 6 Death Company, Powerfist, Razorback (Heavy Bolter)
Death Company - 6 Death Company, Powerfist, Razorback (Heavy Bolter)
Death Company Dreadnought - Blood Talons, Drop-pod

Fast Attack:
Baal Predator - Assault Cannon, Heavy Bolter Sponsons, Dozer Blade

I think this list might actually do ok.  There is a good chance that one or two of the three regular Space Marine squads will suffer from the red thirst removing the need for Priests.  There are three scoring units that are tough.  Two very decent HQ's that compliment each other.  Fits the fluff of the Flesh Tearer's having more Death Company than most.

The first problem I see with it is the fact that there is Death Company present.  I think the rage rule really hurts DC, not to mention their high point cost.  But by fielding two squads of DC I believe this set back is some what mitigated.  The plan is to send them forward to their deaths right off the hop allowing my other troops to maneuver early in the game.  I think with the two squads, chances are I will be able to get at least one unit into hand to hand.  Hopefully I will have been able to do some damage with the Heavy Bolters as well.

I also plan to be aggressive with the Baal Pred and Dreadnought.  First turn using the scout move and drop pod to get into positions to support the DC.  The plan then is to present multiple threats right off in turn one.  The rest of the army I would meatball up and push forward first turn.  Allowing me to set up and control the center of the board in turn one: while my opponent deals with all the initial threat.

There you have it, It may not be the most competitive list, but I think it would be a fun to model and play.

  1. The only thing I see wrong are the maxed out Death Company squads in the Razorbacks. I assume you will want Astorath in your DC, if he's out in the open i'm gonna want to shoot him. Pretty much everything there scares me. The drop pod in particular. The Death Company are good but they don't score and if they are advancing in Rhinos then I have a turn to stop them, which I can reliably do first or second turn. The Land Raider is pretty much unstoppable and I probably wont even waste fire on it, just MC it when it gets close to unload. The payload is not that scary, I haven't been impressed with assault marines, but they have a good chance at furious charge and that might change my opinion.

  2. The idea behind the two squads of DC was to provide my army speed bumps against the nids. Astorath will attach to the assault squad with jump packs. I plan to hop him around from squad to squad to whomever will be assaulting. The assault squad will advance behind the landraider and rhino's for cover.

The DC are actually throw away units. I figure the razorbacks can get them mid field before they are taken out. The DC then present a very real threat that must be dealt with as they can do a lot of damage. 20 strength 5 attacks on the charge with 3 strength 9 powerfist attacks as well on the charge. They all have feel no pain. Plus if I can position Astorath to join their squad they can re role hits and wounds. They simply cannot be ignored and I don't care if they die.

As for the land raider, ya the payload is not that scary. It can score though with the assault squad in it. Also, Seth and the Assault squad can assault multiple targets from the raider. It would be nice if I had some more power weapons though and I will try to coordinate any assaults to include Astorath. I could drop a squad of DC to get more power weapons but I like the idea of two small squads of them.

Like I said though, I do not think this is a powerful list: more a fun list. I think a big problem is the lack of a psychic hood. It might be worth my time to dump a DC squad and add a furioso librarian in drop pod...

  3. I have no idea where you find the time for this boyo. But it's good stuff. Just don't let the baby get a hold of those miniatures - a space marine in the throat is a major choking hazard. (Noah)
